5 Essential (Yet Basic) Prepper Supplies You Should Always Have on Hand (and Why)

Just what prepper supplies you should have around your home is a matter of preference. That being said, there are some that just offer so much utility it would be folly not to have them around.

This is especially true when the “prepper supply” does double duty as a regular household item. Here are some of the best of them.

1.  Salt

You literally die without salt; you need it in your diet. On top of that, salt is the spice of life; add it to anything bland and it instantly becomes better, which will be a real morale booster in a truly SHTF, emergency situation.

Salt can also be used to preserve meat, which is critical if the power goes out and you won’t be able to freeze anything. Also, in the absence of commercial tanning supplies, salt can help you preserve skins.

Salt is also a great sterilization agent, if nothing else is available.

2.  Paraffin wax

Paraffin wax has a million and one uses, and is an excellent prepper supply. It is a great lubricant; use it to free stuck zippers and snap-buttons, or use it on a squeaky faucet and watch it work its wonders. It’s also a great lubricant for drawers, door hinges, and much more.

Paraffin wax is also an excellent fuel; use it to cast candles and you can literally make an emergency candle stash if the power ever goes out. With a good candle lantern, you can use paraffin wax not only for light, but for supplemental heat, to warm up food, or a room.

Paraffin wax can also be rubbed into fabric to add a layer of waterproofing, increasing its utility.

3.  Isopropyl alcohol

Isopropyl alcohol is chiefly used as a sterilization agent, which makes it highly valuable for topical disinfection in survival scenarios.

However, isopropyl alcohol can also be used in some stoves that take liquid fuel, which means it can be used as a fuel for cooking as well.

In addition, it can be used in some lighters as a supplemental fuel, such as zippos, if other fields are not available.

Many compounds are soluble in isopropyl as well, which means it is an excellent cleaner.

4.  Duct tape

Duct tape is one of those things that has endless uses. The obvious ones are for making quick fixes to broken gear, but it has many other uses in addition to these.

Duct tape can be applied to a pipe to help stop or at least slow a leak; you can rip it into straps and use them to weave cordage. The inner weave of duct tape can also be used as thread for stitching.

Duct tape is also flammable and works as a firestarter, in a pinch.

5.  A spark wheel

There is a reason we recommend spark wheels rather than lighters, and it is a simple one. With a lighter, if you don’t have fuel, you might be up a creek. But with a spark wheel, you’re expected to find the fuel on your own.

Spark wheels last for thousands if not tens of thousands of strikes (depending on quality and the size of the “flint”). They also work with tons of different types of tinders, including lint, dried vegetative material, and much more.

Their longevity and simplicity, paired with their versatility, makes them among the most practical of all commercially available firestarters.
