What You Should (and Shouldn’t) Put on Your Antique Bedside Table

If you have recently purchased an antique bedside table or are considering doing so very soon, we first wanted to let you know that you made (and are making) the right choice.

Having an antique piece of any kind in your home can unequivocally add elegance with a unique enamoring flair to your decor that could easily be loved by anyone– resident or guest. However, it is also no secret that antiques are extremely delicate pieces that require special care and attention constantly.

These pieces’ specific care routines, though, depend on each individual’s characteristics, and this certainly includes your bedside tables. This includes not only cleaning procedures but also what you put on them. Let’s take a look at a brief list of what you should add to your antique bedside table and what you shouldn’t.

You Should Add:

A Protective Cloth/Runner
If you intend on adding any decorative items to your antique nightstand, then you should opt to place a protective cloth between the delicate furniture and the items. This will keep it safe from dust, watermarks (sometimes), or scratches.

A Quaint Bedside Lamp
Why not add both a practical and relaxing element to your bedside table? A small yet quaint table lamp could do the trick (bonus points for an antique lamp!).

A Candle (with Safety Measures)
There really is nothing quite like lighting a candle in your home, whether it be in the kitchen, bathroom, or bedroom. The warm illumination is second to none, as is the intoxicating aroma. You can indeed place a candle on your antique night stand, but make sure that it is in a candle holder that doesn’t allow the heat to directly contact the wood and will not drip wax onto the delicate wood.

Books (Especially if They Are Old)
Even if you aren’t a devoted reader, your nightstand could still reap the benefits of the unique aesthetic books can supply. You can place a small stack of books on it (2-3 is the magic number) and easily acquire that charming look you’re after. However, you can also take this a step further and use older books that are weathered to match your antique bedroom table!

You Shouldn’t Add:

Real Flowers in a Vase
We all love how beautiful flowers are and how they can freshen up the look of any room just by being present. However, they shouldn’t be placed on your antique nightstand. This is because there is always a possibility that they will leave a watermark or water will leak from the flowers themselves. It’s simply not worth the risk.

Direct Sunlight
We know that this isn’t technically a tangible object, but people do often use natural lighting to bring their home to life (and we don’t blame them for that). If you do, simply just make sure your antique table is out of the way of the sun’s harmful rays! This is because direct sunlight can cause it to fade, discolor, or even lose its original lovable stains.
