Three Things You Need to Protect Your Mattress Against When Moving

Furniture and bedding are expensive and for some families, these things are likely also heirlooms. This makes it critical to protect them both during moves and in storage.

But some items are inherently more difficult to move than others. Consider mattresses and box springs, which are both large, heavy, and bulky, and can easily be damaged by improper handling and storage.

Mattresses, specifically can be cut by the double-edged sword of being both unwieldy and soft. So how is it that you can better protect them during moving and storage? A king-sized mattress might just be a bear, but even a twin, a full, or a queen is not easy to move!

One thing you can do is always to make sure you use a properly designed plastic mattress bag that protects against the following three factors.

Abrasion

Improper handling is, for most people, how their mattresses get damaged in transit. Let’s not forget that mattresses are heavy and cumbersome, but despite that, they do not like being rested on the ground or against walls.

Worst of all, even when mattresses do have carry handles (and not all of them do!) they’re too tall to effectively move for some movers without some incidental contact against the ground or the environment.

Long moves that take mattresses out in the open, out on sidewalks, up and down flights of stairs, and along long corridors are less than friendly towards mattresses.

You can’t completely prevent a mattress from getting scraped up against ledges or against the sides of a moving truck. The best thing you can do is try to deal with the fallout.

And the best protection against these things comes in the form of a protective mattress bag.

Settling Dirt and Dust

Settling dirt and dust are another, separate problem. Even if by some miracle your mattress was handled exclusively by a team of professionals that didn’t allow it to come in contact with a wall, stair or ground even for a second, the moment they walk away, a new game is on.

Placing your mattress in storage or in the back of a moving truck will place it at risk of being contacted by settling dirt, dust, and other contaminants.

The problem is, mattresses cannot be cleaned in the same manner as other textiles and similar consumer goods. It’s not like you can just “throw your mattress in the wash.” The only way to prevent damage in these situations is to prevent your mattress from getting dirty in the first place.

And, again, the best way to do that is by using a high-quality, abrasion-resistant mattress bag.

Water Damage

Last but certainly not least, we have water damage. It should be obvious why dirty or contaminated water is not good for a mattress, but even fresh, clean water will damage one, too.

Here’s the thing. Once a mattress gets wet, it’s almost impossible for it to dry out. That means it will stay wet, which means it will not only allow but encourage microbes to grow. Perhaps worst of all, when a mattress gets wet it will harbor the growth of mold and mildew, which at their least offensive cause unsightly stains and at their most pose a distinct threat to human health and wellbeing.

So, again, moving a mattress means protecting it with a high-quality mattress cover – just make sure they have vent holes when used for storage because plastic mattress bags can also trap water.
