Maintenance Suggestions for a Lithium 12V RV Battery That Help Uphold Longevity

There are many things to love about a new lithium 12V RV battery. Among these are that:

  • Lithium batteries have a high energy density and are lightweight and compact
  • They are highly efficient
  • They are safe, especially when equipped with a BMS
  • They charge quickly
  • They have a slow self-discharge rate (they don’t go dead on their own as fast as lead-acid batteries)
  • They are environmentally friendly
  • They offer a much greater longevity than lead-acid batteries

Even if only for this latter fact, lithium RV batteries have become quite popular. And despite the fact that they require minimal maintenance compared to lead-acid batteries, it still behooves you to know how to properly care for and store the battery so as to protect the investment. After all, that new 12V RV battery won’t be cheap.

That being the case, here are some top suggestions for lithium RV battery maintenance, care and storage.

Inspect the Battery Routinely

Lithium batteries can last a long time – 10 years or longer, or, in other words, 4000 or more complete cycles. However, one thing to note about lithium batteries is that leaving them in a discharged state can permanently damage them.

Therefore, the battery should be routinely inspected, especially if it is not in use. For a 12V battery at full charge, the voltage should read between 13.2 and 13.6 volts. Below 13.0 volts, the battery will be approximately 50% discharged.

If the reading is lower, fully charge the battery. Moreover, batteries should not just be fully charged, but then discharged after doing so, before charging again.

During inspection the terminals should also be assessed for damage or corrosion. Clean them if any corrosion is detected and make sure to replace any batteries that appear damaged, rather than attempting to use them.

Charge the Battery Responsibly

Battery chemistry influences how quickly the battery takes a charge, what sort of charger should be used, and the charging rate, in terms of amperage. To be on the safe side, only charge your battery with the charger it came with.

It is also advisable not to attempt to charge a 12V RV battery in extreme conditions. Both hot and cold can damage the lifespan and performance of the battery. However, lithium batteries do not vent dangerous gases during charging, as lead-acid batteries do, so that’s one thing you don’t need to worry about.

Store the Battery Wisely

Lastly, take care to store lithium RV batteries wisely, especially if they will not be in use for a prolonged period of time. They should be protected from extreme temperatures, stored at an optimal charge level, and disconnected from any sources of parasitic draw.
