Glock Mags: Questions and Answers

Looking for information on Glock magazines, or on magazines in general? You’re in the right place. Start here.

Are Any Glock Mags Cross-Compatible?

Yes, in fact, many Glock magazines are cross-compatible between models. Of the same generation, in general, double-stack Glock mags of the same caliber and capacity are cross-compatible between models.

However, this is not always the case, and will depend on generation and model in addition to caliber and capacity.

Can You Buy Glock Mags from Other Sellers?

Yes, you can buy Glock mags through retailers and other distributors. One great place to check out online is Bucking Horse Outpost. They carry Glock mags, including bundles as well as mags for Springfield, Sig, Ruger, HK, S&W, and other popular handguns.

Can You Leave Bullets in a Glock Mag?

Yes, absolutely. It is not compression that wears out a firearm mag spring. It is the number of compression and decompression cycles. By all means load the mag and leave it loaded for as long as you like. The spring won’t fatigue until it’s gone through several (thousands, usually) of cycles. You won’t damage it by leaving it loaded.

What Does It Mean to Break in a Magazine?

Breaking in a magazine refers to the process of creating a better fitment between the gun’s mag catch/release and the magazine itself.

When new, magazines are a lot like a new pair of boots. They’re stiff and need to be broken in. The easy way to do this is just to use them routinely at the round. Shoot through them a few times and you’ll notice they get smoother.

You can artificially speed up the process by loading and dropping the mag a few times, and by loading and unloading it with snap caps.

The best way is just organically, though. Use them at the range and with time they will break in.

Should You Clean Gun Magazines?

You should 100% clean your gun magazines (Glock or otherwise). In fact, this is one of the most glaring oversights of gun owners – not cleaning their mags.

Just like your gun’s bore and action, the mag will accumulate oil, grease, fouling, and other debris over time. These things can cause jams and accelerate corrosion.

Glock mags are mostly polymer, so they’re not really at risk of corrosion, but keeping a clean mag will still result in smoother, more reliable feeding and a longer magazine lifespan.

They’re also easy to clean. Remove the base plate and insert, and you can pull out the spring and follower. Wipe the inside of the mag clean, clean and dry the spring and follower, and reassemble in reverse order.

What’s the Difference Between a Magazine and a Clip?

Magazines store and feed ammo into the firearm’s action. Clips simply hold ammunition and cannot be used to feed the ammo directly into the action. Some clips known as “charger” or “stripper” clips are used to load magazines, but again, they cannot be used as magazines. Stop calling magazines clips – they are not the same thing.
