Home Remedies to Remove Common Stains from Fur Coats

fox fur coat

Fur coats have long been a status symbol of elegance, luxury, and even decadence, but they are also known to be difficult to clean and maintain. These garments are very susceptible to damage, as the fur requires specific cleaning materials and methods.

The most common stains, such as food, drinks, and makeup smudges can be difficult to remove, and the most popular home do-it-yourself remedies might not be the best way to deal with these stains, especially if you want to retain your fox fur coat’s pristine qualities.

So which home remedies work on specific stains and which do not? Let’s look at each of them and see if they can truly help.

Makeup

These are common stains, and removing them requires a bit of understanding on the type of makeup that created the stain. Powder-based makeup may only need a shake of the fabric or fox fur coat to remove the residue.

If the makeup is cream or liquid-based, a cloth made damp with a mix of dish soap and water could remove the stain. It is best to blot the stain, instead of rubbing the coat. Gently blot the stain and then when it clears up rinse the area with a damp sponge of cold water.

Do not use alcohol, bleach, or strong detergents, as they can damage the delicate fibers of the fur coat.

Beverage Stains

Colored beverages such as wine and soda could also create stains on fur coats, but they can be easily removed with a simple remedy. Use a clean paper towel or cloth to absorb the beverage, making sure to absorb all extra liquids in the coat.

Create a solution combining equal parts of water and hydrogen peroxide, and only apply it on the stain using a cloth. If the beverage has no color, it’s best to skip this part, but if it is red wine or a colored drink, do this approach gently.

Let it sit for a few minutes and then check if the stain is still there and do it again. Then rinse with cold water and let the fur coat air dry.

Food Stains

Food has a lot of ingredients, but no matter what kind of food spilled on you, it most likely contains oils and grease. Once you remove the solid remains of the food, you might see a stain that comes from the oil and grease.

Use a sprinkle of cornstarch or talcum powder to absorb any oil or grease, and remember to only apply it in the area of the stain. You can leave it overnight for the powder to absorb the oils, and then brush it off the next day.

If there is a remaining residue, mix a tiny amount of dish soap and warm water and using a soft cloth, blot the stain gently. You can then rinse the fur coat with cold water and dry it with a clean towel.

Water Stains

If your fur coat has been exposed to rain or melting snow, the fur coat can develop water stains which can seriously affect the appearance of the fur coat. First, you can shake off the excess water or moisture, and let it dry naturally.

Once completely dry, use a brush and fluff out the fur to reveal its texture once more. If the water stain is still present, use a mixture of white vinegar and water in equal parts, and dab it onto the water stain using a soft cloth. Let it air dry naturally and brush the fur coat once more.

Home Remedies Work, But Not All the Time

These remedies may work for you if you know how to do them properly. However, if your fox fur coat has a stain that is extensive and seemingly irreparable, it’s best to bring it to a professional cleaners.

When it comes to ink stains, paint, and even biological stains, it’s best to bring it to a professional and have it cleaned properly.
