How to Choose Sports Bras for HIIT and Other High-Intensity Workouts

Women who engage in high-intensity workouts such as HIIT, CrossFit, or even good old-fashioned boot camp sessions know that they’re no joke. They’re sweaty, fast-paced, and full of jumping, running, and twisting. For this reason, it’s important to be wearing the right supportive sports bras: otherwise, things can get really uncomfortable, really fast.

How, though, do you find the perfect sports bras that can actually keep up with you? Read on below:

Understand the Importance of Support

Let’s get the important stuff out of the way first: being properly supported isn’t just a “nice-to-have” when you’re working out. It’s a must. This is particularly true when you’re engaging in high-impact activities: your chest will move in all directions, not just up and down. That movement can lead to discomfort, distraction, and may even cause long-term sagging if you’re not careful about managing it properly.

The right sports bra reduces movement, giving your breasts the support they need so that you can focus on your workout instead of adjusting straps or dealing with bounce.

Be Sure You Know Your Size

Here’s a not-so-fun fact that you might not know about: a lot of women are actually wearing the wrong size bra without realizing it. When it comes to sports bras, finding the correct fit can be even more challenging. The size of your everyday bra might not be the right size for sports bras that you’ll wear when you work out but it also could be the same size, so you need to double check.

Before you shop, take a few minutes to measure your bust and underbust. Many brands have size guides on their websites that can help you find your true fit based on those numbers.

It’s also important to remember that your bra size can change over time. Weight fluctuations, hormonal shifts, and even changes in your fitness level can all impact how a bra fits. If your go-to bra isn’t cutting it anymore, it might be time to reassess.

Pick the Right Level of Support

Not all sports bras are built the same. For low-impact workouts like yoga or walking, you can get away with light support. For HIIT, running, or anything else high-intensity, though, you need maximum support – no exceptions.

To that end, look for sports bras labeled as “high-impact” or “maximum support”. These bras are designed to lock things down without feeling as though you’re wearing a straitjacket. If you want a sports bra that holds your chest close to your body, you might want to take a look at compression bras – they can be great for women with smaller busts. If you have a larger bust, encapsulation bras (which support each breast individually) or a combo of compression and encapsulation can provide the best support and comfort.

Pay Attention to Fabric and Breathability

You can expect yourself to sweat a lot during intense workouts. That can be incredibly uncomfortable – and distracting, by extension. A good sports bra should wick moisture away from your skin to keep you feeling cool and dry. Moisture-wicking fabrics, such as polyester blends, or high-performance materials specifically designed for active wear are your best friends here. Avoid cotton like the plague, as it soaks up sweat and can take forever to dry, which can lead to skin irritation if you aren’t careful.

Breathability matters, too. Mesh panels or strategic cutouts can help with ventilation, so you’re not left feeling overheated halfway through your workout. Comfort is key, and breathable fabric can make a big difference.
