What Are the Duties of a Bishop? - eWriterForYou - Best Guest Posting Site

What Are the Duties of a Bishop?

Bishops are superintendents of the church who are assigned to specific geographic areas, called Diocese in the Catholic Church.

Bishops are responsible for general administration and for the edification of the clergymen and women under their care, as well as the members of the church under their direction.

Among their many responsibilities are the charge to visit each part of the Diocese regularly, to attend Synods, and to live in the Diocese. Bishops in the Catholic Church must also send reports to Rome and meet with the Pope every five years.

But what else are the responsibilities of a bishop?

As an Educator

One of the most tangible responsibilities of a bishop is to act as an educator. A bishop must directly preach the Word of God and is responsible for ensuring that those within his Diocese, other teachers, priests, and others, spread the truth.

As an Administrator

Bishops are responsible for overseeing the financing that funds their Diocese, and ultimately for ensuring the proper training of all that are under him or her.

Ultimately, a bishop is responsible for seeing to the needs of the local community and ensuring that all church laws are followed.

The bishop is also uniquely vested with the authority to create church laws, oversee and enforce those laws, and act as a judge in matters of church law.

As a Spiritual Leader

A bishop must also serve as a spiritual leader. He or she is responsible for ensuring that Sacraments are administered appropriately. Bishops can also ordain members of the clergy and can administer the Sacrament of Confirmation.

As a Friend

The role of the bishop in the church is also to serve as an emblem of kindness, humility, courtesy, prudence, and of course, charity.

The bishop should serve as an icon of these virtues and be a spiritual, friendly, approachable resource, not only for peer members of the clergy but for those under his care.

Bishops must have the benefit of time, time to pray, reflect, and embody these virtues so as to serve as role models for those with whom they come into contact.

What Does a Bishop Wear?

Bishops can often be identified simply by some of the clerical garments they wear. Bishop attire is typically colored purple or magenta.

Bishops usually wear a mitre which is a tall, triangular, ceremonial headdress; when not wearing the mitre, a bishop may wear instead a small cap-like piece of headwear known as a zucchetto.

Bishops may also wear a purple mozzetta, which is like a short cape or mantle that is worn over the shoulders.

When not arrayed in these habiliments, bishops may wear instead a cassock and cincture – also typically colored purple.

Bishop attire is typically completed with the adornment of a pectoral cross and ring. They also sometimes carry a crozier, which is a staff that looks like a shepherd’s hook and serves as a symbol of the bishop as the shepherd of his flock.
