Why You Should Thread Mill Pipe Threads

When it comes to working with pipes that will transfer liquid of gas, having the proper threads can make a world of difference. While a layman might not consider the importance of threads, there are several different standards that define how pipe threads are cut in order to assure a perfect fit. One of the best ways to create clean threads quickly is to cut them with a milling machine. When you thread mill pipe threads, you can create perfectly uniform threads in seconds. Thread milling tools can produce a wide variety of different thread standards.

The best thread standard is all about the application of the pipes in question. National pipe threads or NPT threads are some of the most commonly used threads when it comes to pipes that will transfer water and other liquids. If pipes are moving fuel or gas, they have to use NPTF standards(the F stands for fuel in this case). In order to ensure that these pipes will have a leak free seal, the threads have to be cut with the right tools.

The classic tools for cutting threaded surfaces are taps and dies. These tools move along the threaded surface, cutting and breaking chips. Similar cutting designs are also used in pipe threading machines. The issue with these tools is that failure to properly break chips can cause the cutter to jam. This can halt threading by damaging the pipe and the tool. Luckily, modern tools offer superior threading options like thread mills.

If you want one of the fastest and most effective tools to thread mill pipe threads, then full form thread mills are the perfect option. These tools are designed with rows of cutting teeth that are spaced and tapered to correspond to the thread standard that they are designed to cut. Because the teeth are spaced based on thread pitch, each full form tool can only cut a single thread pitch.

Despite this limitation, these tools are extremely versatile. A single tool can cut both right hand and left hand threads both internally and externally. The actual cutting process is completed in a single 360 degree pass. The body of the tool is dropped the distance of a thread pitch while making the cut, which causes each cutting tooth to finish its cut on pitch length below where it started, creating a helical thread. As long as the tool path has been imputed correctly, you can thread pipes and fittings with ease.

Now obviously full form thread mills are quick and convenient, but there are other options. A single pitch thread mill is a tool with only one cutting point. This means that your tool will have to trace along the entire length of a threaded surface. Obviously this process is going to take longer but these tools do have some advantages. If you need to cut threads with different pitches or you are cutting on an overhang, thin walled, or other unstable piece of your workpiece, these tools have a more gentle cutting force compared to full form tools.
